1) Whole Number Computation & Applications: Grade 5 students begin their year with whole number computation and applications, developing fluent processes to multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers and solve real-world problems.

2) Volume: The second unit introduces students to the concept of volume using cubic units. Students will measure volume by counting cubic units, discussing and interpreting visual models and operations of addition and multiplication, before understanding the volume formula. This lays a solid foundation for work with exponents in Grade 6.

3) Fraction Computation & Applications: Unit 3 is an opportunity for 5th graders to develop an understanding of fractions as division, understand addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions, become fluent with fraction computation and apply those procedures to solve problems involving fractions.

4) Decimal Computation & Applications: In Unit 4, students extend their understanding of place value to decimals, develop procedures for decimal computation, and apply those procedures to solve problems involving decimals.

5) 2-Dimensional Geometry: Unit 5 is a study of the properties of shapes and the hierarchy of 2-dimensional shapes.

6) Coordinate Geometry: Unit 6 is an introduction to the coordinate plane, where students generate patterns, plot points and write and interpret simple expressions.
