Literacy in 59
#d59learns
Being literate is essential for success in our modern world. In CCSD59, we focus on building a strong foundation of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as developing a passion and love for all aspects of being a successful reader and writer.
By utilizing a workshop model in reading and writing instruction, students are provided the opportunity to learn foundational aspects of literacy development and then become apprentices by applying what they have learned. The workshop model focuses on providing students with specific instruction through mini-lessons in reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, comprehension and fluency, and writing and language skills such as craft, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
Following the mini-lesson, students are then provided the opportunity to apply their learning during purposeful practice. This portion of literacy instruction allows time for students to read while applying the skills and strategies learned during the mini-lesson as well as participate in meaningful writing opportunities to publish written works.
Our literacy curriculum is based on the belief system and classroom culture in which students see themselves as authentic readers and writers.
