Elementary Students Get Moving With Brain Breaks
This year District 59 is beginning a new initiative to ensure students are more active throughout the day. Every Kindergarten through 5th grade classroom will be participating in 15 minutes of brain breaks/movement time every day. These teacher-facilitated activities will be incorporated during the day when students need to refocus and re-energize in the classroom.
Research has shown that brain breaks can:
- Decrease behavioral problems
- Increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain
- Increase concentration and readiness to learn
- Incorporate fun and exercise into the classroom
It is highly recommended that students wear gym shoes to school on a daily basis so they are prepared for a variety of activities. Students should also dress appropriately to participate – comfortable clothes, shorts under dresses and skirts, etc.
In addition to the activity during the school day, it is recommended that children participate in at least an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. You are encouraged to visit pe.ccsd59.org and enjoy some of the activities at home with your child.
