CCSD59 Serves Up Some Pi
On March 14, 2015, (3/14/15) at 9:26am, CCSD59 dished out a 3.14 mile Pi Day Walk/Run.
While the weather cooperated and provided a beautiful day to be outside with family and friends for the Pi Day Walk/Run, volunteers provided all the needed help including directing street traffic, passing out water and refreshments, and taking photos.
Attendees of all ages came to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise after a seemingly endless winter. Many families participated together, and walkers, runners, and strollers alike were visible throughout the event. Over 120 participants were in attendance as well as volunteers from 11 schools and the district’s administration building.
Apple pie slices were served in honor of the “Pi” theme, and there were raffles for additional prizes. All participants received a T-shirt, water bottle, and magnet as take home gifts.
The first to cross the finish line were Dr. Josh Carpenter, Director of Math and TDP at CCSD59, his son J.D., and Ethan Groark.
Generous donations for the event were made by Jarosch Bakery, R & M Specialties, Meijer, and Steve & Kate’s Camp.
Susan Ejma, Principal of Juliette Low Elementary, commented, “Pi Day was a great success. The students, families, and community members enjoyed a beautiful day to walk or run around the Juliette Low community to celebrate the mathematical constant. We couldn’t have asked for a better day, especially with having apple pie at the end.”
Dr. Carpenter said, “I saw everyone having a great time, families interacting and staff working together. It was just an excellent experience, and the volunteers were quite the pros at organizing the race.”
